Education Along an Uneven Road

Learning does not always follow the timetable we expect

My education did not follow a straight line.

There were years when I was out of school. Later came further study, work in banking, and more than a decade of experience teaching financial management at Palm Beach State College.

When I put those experiences beside one another, I see how much a brief biography can leave out. A list of qualifications records milestones. It rarely explains the interruptions between them, or what it takes to begin again.

That is part of why I wanted to write my life story.

I know what it means to approach education from different positions: as someone seeking access to it, as a student working toward a qualification, and as an educator explaining a subject to others. Those experiences inform how I think about introducing people to unfamiliar technology.

A beginner needs a place to start. Clear language helps. So does room to ask a question without embarrassment.

I try to bring that approach to the AI portions of From Rural Haiti to AI. Readers should be able to explore the tools without already knowing the vocabulary of the technology industry.

My own road has given me reasons to value continued learning. I hope the book encourages readers whose education has also included interruptions, changes of direction or a later return.

Is there something you have wanted to learn but kept postponing?
